Waterwise gardening grows on you!

For more than 20 years, Water Corporation has partnered with Greenlife Industry Western Australia to
support waterwise gardening across the state. We’re glad to be working together again at this year’s Perth
Garden Show. Don’t forget to come by the Water Corporation Garden Design Zone and say hi when you
visit!

Gardening and being waterwise go hand in hand. Waterwise gardens support biodiversity, help cool our
suburbs and improve the health and wellbeing of our communities.

Across southern Western Australia, average rainfall has fallen by 20 per cent since the 1970s, contributing
to an 80 percent drop in streamflow (rainfall runoff) into Perth’s dams. It simply doesn’t rain like it used to.
Because of this, we’re relying more on rainfall‑independent sources like desalination. Desalination is
essential, but it isn’t a silver bullet. One of the easiest and most effective ways we can support our state’s
water future is by reducing demand or simply put, being waterwise.

As a gardener, your actions make a big difference. Nearly 36 per cent of household water use happens outdoors and watering just one extra day a week can waste 87 buckets of water – that’s 348 buckets a
month. WA, we’re wasting bucketloads.

Top waterwise tips for your garden:

  • Stick to your rostered watering days and only water once, before 9am or after 6pm. Watering
    outside your days wastes bucketloads.
  • Switch off sprinklers when it rains.
  • Protect your soil with mulch. It’s sunscreen for your garden.
  • Choose waterwise plants and group plants with similar watering needs.
  • Ask a Waterwise Specialist to help find and fix leaks, even a small leak can add up to
    bucketloads over time.

Green spaces are essential to making our cities liveable and so is using water sustainably. By following
waterwise principles, you can create a thriving garden while saving bucketloads.

Water Corporation is proud to be part of the Perth Garden Show and to support Western Australians to grow beautiful,
waterwise gardens.
