If you think floristry is all quiet studios and carefully curated bouquets, think again. This year, the Floral Wizard Competition is bringing high-energy, live floral artistry to the stage at the Perth Garden Show! Inspired by the fast-paced creativity of MasterChef Australia, this competition transforms floral design into a live spectacle. Expect mystery boxes, ticking clocks, bold ideas, and breathtaking blooms — all unfolding right before your eyes.
A Masterclass in Creativity — Live
At the heart of the Floral Wizard Competition are the talented students from the Advanced Floristry Skillset Course at South Metropolitan TAFE. These emerging florists won’t just be arranging flowers — they’ll be competing in a high-pressure, interactive format designed to showcase their skill, adaptability, and creative thinking.
Here’s how it works:
The Mystery Box Moment: Each contestant receives a sealed box filled with a surprise selection of seasonal flowers and design accessories. No hints. No previews. Just raw materials and imagination.
15 Minutes to Plan: Contestants have just 15 minutes to develop a design concept. It’s a fast-thinking exercise in creativity, structure, and problem-solving.
60 Minutes to Create: Then the clock starts. In one intense hour, competitors transform their mystery materials into a fully realised floral masterpiece — constructed live on stage.
For the audience, it’s a rare behind-the-scenes look at the real process of floristry — the decisions, the adjustments, the technical skills, and the artistry that bring a design to life.
Be at the Perth Garden Show on Friday 17 April and get a seat at the Richgro Stage at 10am to see all the action!
Floristry is often experienced only at its final stage — a finished bouquet or installation. The Floral Wizard Competition reveals what happens in between:
- How professionals work under pressure
- How colour palettes evolve on the fly
- How structure and mechanics support beauty
- How creative risks can lead to stunning results
It’s immersive, educational, and surprisingly thrilling.
Judging the Wizards
A panel of three to four experienced educators and industry professionals will assess each creation using a structured marking schedule aligned with industry standards.
Judges will evaluate:
- Creativity and originality
- Technical execution
- Effective use of materials
- Overall design impact
Results are announced approximately 15 minutes after completion — keeping the excitement high until the very end.
Celebrating Talent and Community
Every participant will be recognised on stage, reinforcing Perth Garden Week’s commitment to nurturing creativity and supporting emerging talent.
Awards include:
- Certificates of Participation for all competitors
- The coveted Floral Wizard Trophy, presented live to the overall winner
Beyond the trophy, the competition celebrates learning, growth, and the future of the floristry industry.
More Than a Competition
The Floral Wizard Competition is more than an event — it’s a celebration of:
- Garden culture
- Creative education
- Community collaboration
- The connection between nature and design
With partnerships across floristry suppliers and South Metropolitan TAFE, this experience strengthens the ties between education, industry, and the wider gardening community.
